IFMSA General Assemblies

There are two IFMSA General Assembly meetings every year, in March and in August. IFMSA allocates a Travel Assistance Fund (TAF) that aims to support delegates from member organisations in low income countries to attend IFMSA meetings.

March Meeting

The first meeting of the year, the March Meeting is held every year during the first week of March. The meeting started as a place where Exchange Officers could meet to swap student application forms for exchanges and was known until a few years ago as the Exchange Officers meeting. The meeting however grew in size and currently we have over 600 participants at the March Meetings. All standing committees of IFMSA have working groups during the meeting. There are also sessions for Presidents of the National Member Organizations and plenary sessions during which the Bylaws of our federation can be modified and new applicants for, IFMSA projects, candidate and associate membership status approved. All IFMSA Officials, National Member Organizations and Projects must present a report to the General Assembly for approval.

August Meeting

The August Meeting is held in the first week of August and is the largest meeting organized by IFMSA with over 650 participants meeting for six days. The meeting follows the same structure as the March Meeting with some important exceptions. During the plenary sessions, candidate members can apply for full membership if they satisfy the necessary criteria. The elections for IFMSA positions are also held during the August Meeting. Changes to the IFMSA Constitution are voted upon during this meeting.

Basically each meeting consists of the newcomers session, opening ceremony, concurrent meetings of NMO presidents and standing committees, plenary sessions, training sessions, workshops, project fair, NMO hour, closing ceremony and "social events".

Because both IFMSA General Assembly meetings attract many participants; the meetings are conducted according to a specific procedure.

Executive Board Meetings

The Executive Board meeting of IFMSA must meet according to our bylaws at least three times a year. In practice, the Executive Board meets five times, once before every General Assembly meeting and in October, in January and in May. All IFMSA Officials  are invited to these meetings which serve to discus the work of IFMSA in between General Assembly meetings. IFMSA Liaison Officers are also appointed during Executive Board meetings.
