Unforgettable event in March Meeting 2005 (part 2)

IFMSA Palestine had to get the recognition nationally by our medical school and then to construct an organization that would get the respect of national and international communities. Finally, we established IFMSA Palestine with the same structure of the IFMSA and having the same committees as the IFMSA.

Luckily, we had a very supportive dean who helped us achieve our dream of making IFMSA Palestine a reality, as well as a group of teachers who supported us to achieve this goal, without forgetting the Foundation of Al-Quds medical school in the UK who played a great role in our success.

We applied for membership a few days before the deadline, yet we were still worried about being accepted as a candidate member, as Palestine is still not recognized as a state by the UN.

A delegation of four medical students attended the March Meeting of IFMSA, with high hopes of becoming an official NMO. In the first few days of the assembly, the IFMSA would be deciding whether IFMSA Palestine would be accepted as a candidate member. In the plenary in which IFMSA Palestine membership was to be decided, I went to the stage to present our presentation what the outcome might be. Suddenly, before finishing the presentation, the whole audience stood up and started clapping. Their support of our work and achievements thrilled me and I was full of emotions that I can never express in words. Then, the IFMSA member organizations supported our candidature; with FIMS supporting and seconding the motion to have IFMSA Palestine as a candidate member.

After getting the candidate membership in Plenary session

IFMSA Palestine was given membership in an event that was described as one of the greatest in IFMSA history, with medical students from all over the world rising above political issues, setting a great example of acceptance, tolerance and respect between nations, with Palestine having the same rights and representation of any country in the world. What a great moment!
