Greece (HelMSIC) - Dimitris Goulas (NOME), George Dafoulas

Following up the common workshop of EMSA and IFMSA at the IFMSA GA in Aalborg, Denmark in 2001, about the topic "Working Abroad", the Local Committee of the Hellenic(Greek) Medical Students' International Committee(HelMSIC) of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, is organising annually, a round table discussion about the "Medical Specialty in Greece and Abroad" in the main auditorium of the Medical Faculty.

The event is organised in cooperation with the Career Services Office of the University, the Goethe Institute of Thessaloniki, the Fulbright Foundation, the British Council and the French Institute which make a presentation about the medical specialty in Greece, Germany, USA, UK, and France.

The objectives are to :

  • Inform the Medical Students about the Medical Specialty in Greece and Abroad
  • Compare and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of every system and open a dialogue in the medical academic community about this topic
  • Promote HelMSIC, IFMSA and EMSA activities to the medical students and the University Authorities.

About 300 students and young doctors participate. The president of the medical doctors' association of Thessaloniki, the Vice Rector of the University, the Dean of the Medical Faculty and the Director of the Career Services Office are invited at the events. Similar events are organised in other HelMSIC local committees in other Greek Universities.

In the beginning of May (3 5/5/2003) we organized a workshop in Kos Island. This workshop belongs to the activities of the AREHNA project. The subjects that were analyzed during these 3 days were mortality, mobility caused by air pollution, priority air pollutants caused by traffic, acute problems of mobility health: accidents, environmental issues, climate changes, carcinogens, WHO's epidemiological studies, health effects and biological mechanisms related to air pollution (case studies) and strategies to clean urban transport.
During this workshop were invited to participate students, professors and doctors from EU (Portugal, Greece, Belgium, Spain, Denmark), Romania, Bulgaria and Czech Republic. Also Marius Grima, the IFMSA's treasurer was invited and participated in this workshop.

On 11 of May a workshop about psychiatric diseases was organized. We presented the new data about the schizophrenia that we have from the psychiatric society all around the world. But the main purpose of this presentation was to inform the students about the attitude of the society towards the schizophrenic patients. The purpose was to inform and change the image that people have about these kind of diseases and help the socialization of the schizophrenic patients.

During the last two weeks of May we gave questionnaires to medical students (mainly to students from the last 3 clinical years). The subject of these questionnaires was HIV and Hepatitis and how the students protect themselves during blood tests and which is their behavior to this kind of patients. The results of the questionnaires were announced in a workshop that was organized on 31 of May. During this workshop doctors and psychologists announced all the information about HIV in Greece, how people can protect them selves and how doctors should behave themselves to HIV infected patients and their relatives.

Italy (S.I.S.M. Italy) - Francesca Lodato

Residency

Since three years in Italy there is a big problem about residency courses for medicine, in fact the whole system is going to be changed, including the exam that we have to do to access to residency; is a very long story, but in general the problem is that the ministry of university want to cut the number of residents and to do an exam extremely unfair for students; so our job was to collect info, to inform students and young doctors and to propose a different exam to the ministry of university. We went many times to talk with the minister and to parlamentars, to sensibilize about the problem and we wrote relation for the ministry of education; we worked in cooperation with the main association of residents (who was interested mainly in the problem of reforming the educational system of residency and introducing the contract for residents, because at the moment residents are considered as students and receive just a grant for their job, without having any insurance, previdencial guaranties, days free for illness and maternity!!). at the moment we achieved some result, the new law about the exam was published few weeks ago, and there is some contribution of ours, but we still have to work to modify some part of it.

Italian Clerkship

in cooperation with NEOs, we invented this project, that is a bit more complex than professional exchanges. is based on a pedagogical project, written by students and teachers, for clinical students who wants to spend one month time in another city, practising in some subject, to do some research for their thesis, or just to see how it works in another city. we did a selection of the suitable departments to include in this project, basing on the opinion of students; in fact we choose just site were students could work a lot, with a very high level on the professional aspect, but also were students were taken in a big consideration, and could learn theoretical and practical skills. so we create a national database including all the projects. the system of exchange is similar to professional exchange, in fact LOMEs sign contract during our national meeting in November, basing on projects proposed by other cities. then students do an exam locally, also basing on projects proposed. at the end, participant fill a questionnaire to verify if the pedagogical project proposed by the teacher has been achieved, and if the expectations have been maintained by the experience. at the moment 8 Italian city are included in this project, and all the students who did this experience are extremely happy about that. our hope is to extend this project to all our local committees

Emergency questionnaire

last year we wrote a questionnaire to verify the status of teaching emergency in different universities around Italy. many student around Italy filled it, and the aim was to underline the problems related to the teaching of practical skill on emergency and BLS to contribute to the realization of iIalian new curriculum

Core curriculum

last year we wrote some documents to the commission in charge to realise the new curriculum, to give an opinion about their job, and to underline the needs of students. we also did a critical revision to the proofs of new curriculum

Role Play

in cooperation with a company of actor directed by a teacher of sociology, we organised courses around Italy based on the method of role plays, on the theme of "relation between patient and doctor". It is a very interactive experience, in witch students plays as doctors and actors plays as patients; the director gives notions about communication theories and methods.

National Meeting

twice a year, all the LOME participate to the national meeting, were we have session dedicated to medical education, coordinated by the NOME

SIPeM Congress

we participate to the congress organised by the Italian Society of Medical Education, to describe our projects

Malta (MMSA) - Philip Amato Gauci

SCOME Buddy System:

Every year SCOME Malta pairs up all 1st year students with a "buddy" from one of the other 4 years of the course. The aim of this project is to help the freshers adjust as quickly as possible to their new surroundings and the university environment. We encourage the 1st year students to get as much information off their older buddies as possible - what books are useful, what they like about the course, and what MMSA and IFMSA are all about!

SCOME at TRD:

Once again last year MMSA organised a Training and Resource Development weekend. At TRD SCOME held a discussion entitled "Prospective Changes in Medical Education". We invited a few of our lecturers to come and talk to SCOME members about what changes they would like to see in our medical education, how to bring about these changes and the future of medical education in Malta. This allowed us to understand what our lecturers think about the present state of the MD course in Malta. It also provided us with the opportunity to build on our plans and to look into new projects suggested by the lecturers.

For the 2003 TRD weekend SCOME has planned a very interesting set of sessions related to the transition from student to working doctor. We have invited several newly qualified doctors to speak to MMSA members about life as a Junior House Officer. These sessions should help to minimise the initial shock students might have receive when they step through the doors of the hospital for the first time as a qualified doctor. Speaking to doctors who have just finished their training should also help to identify any short comings in our education and possibly work out ways to improve the training.

SCOME Questionnaires and Medical Education Seminar:

Twice yearly SCOME distributes questionnaires about medical education and presents the results in the biannual Medical Education Seminar. Through the use of these questionnaires the students' are encouraged to voice the concerns, opinions, praises or complaints for the education that they are receiving. During the seminar, both members of the teaching staff as well as students are invited to take part in an open forum of discussion. The aim of such a project is to help bring about beneficial changes to the MD course.

This was the first time that we enlisted the help of a statistician to present the results of the questionnaires in a more formal and acceptable manner. Statistics seem to be a very useful tool when it comes to promoting change.

SCOME Goes Online

SCOME is currently working on vast improvements to the SCOME section of the MMSA website. As from September all SCOME questionnaires should be online. This should greatly improve student compliance as well as cut down on paper waste. The site will also have a links page listing websites (such as www.mediclass.org) that may be useful as learning tools.

Computer Based Training

New technologies provide opportunities for new medical education tools. Unfortunately not everyone realises this. SCOME has decided to hold Computer Based Training courses for MD students. These sessions will be practical based so that each student will have the opportunity to explore different software and websites.

Medical Terminology Dictionary

This project is still in its infancy. Since Malta is a bilingual country, some students may lack adequate medical vocabulary in either Maltese or English. SCOME plans to produce a short booklet with English Maltese and Maltese English translations of basic medical terms. This project should also benefit foreign students studying in Malta and those who come on exchange.

National conference on medical education:

Medical education has been a prioritized study in Norway for many years. Still the students from the different faculties have never gotten the opportunity to get to together and discuss the aspects of the curriculum and how to improve it. NMSA arranged a conference for students from all faculties and from all student organizations for the first time in the fall 2002, and will repeat the conference in the fall 2003. We learned a lot from the first conference and will use these experiences in addition to the inspiration we got from the pre GA workshop in Estonia to arrange a conference on how to improve our curricula and ways to get there.

Influencing the Norwegian Medical Association

As a full member organization of the NMA we are able to influence the direction of attitudes toward medical education amongst doctors nationwide. This is an organization with heavy impact both political and towards the faculties. One of our goals this year has been to get a student into the national board of the NMA. This has only happened two times before, and because the last student in the board (2001 2003) did such a good job we actually managed to get the leader of NMSA into this board in the last NMA GA. In addition to that we worked both in meeting and outside the meetings to influence delegates to vote for a counsel for medical education in the NMA. There are already such boards for research and gender equality and they have great impact on the development in their field. A counsel for medical education would therefore be a great opportunity to affect the future of medical education and the attitudes of doctors (our teachers) toward ME. We managed to get the GA to advice the national board to create such a board and were very happy for that.

Internship

In Norway the practical period experience needed to get license takes 1.5 years after the studies are over. In this period you are per definition not a doctor yet and are under education. We have chosen to include this in our work on medical education. The largest challenge has been the escalation of students the last couple of years. The system for internship in Norway was not ready for this, even though NMA and NMSA have been warning them about this for a long time. Quite a number of students have to face that they have to wait for internship since the number of open places are fixed. Many possible solutions to this problem has arisen, but none of them were quite good enough. During the last year we have had a representative from NMSA in a group who`s object was to find solutions to the problem. This way we have been able to influence the direction of the future of the internship. The students that have not gotten an internship needed something meaningful to do while they waited. We have tried to find possible solutions for them, and have ended up with offers in medical research, leadership training and medical deputyships.

Meetings and GA`s

We have attended the GA`s of all the major medical professions organizations. Some of these discussed medical education as one of the points of interest in their program for next year. We tried to influence them to further emphasize the importance of this. The leader of NMSA attended the head of faculties meeting. The LOME`s (or the NMSA analog to LOME`s) have been encouraged to take part in the local democracy at the faculties, and several have engaged themselves in the faculty boards.
We attended the IFMSA GA and pre GA in Estonia, and learned a lot!
Ok, this was terribly long and sound like a lot bragging ;) ..... But we are quite satisfied with the work that has been done so far this year in Norway. I am not responsible for all this personally of course (I have to pass some exams as well....), and could not have done all this without good help from many members of NMSA.

Pakistan (IFMSA Pakistan) - Usman Ahmad Raza

I started a "Students Learning Forum" at my college just a month before a came to know of IFMSA, which got official approval few months back, and the aims and objectives of this forum are a combination of SCOME, SCOPE, SCORE. So I decided to merge them together to avoid managerial difficulties. Given below are our activities in the last year, most of which are on local level, however now, after the first GA of IFMSA Pakistan, we shall rapidly expand SCOME to colleges around the country.

LOCAL ACTIVITIES @ Khyber Medical College:

  • KMCONLINE THE FIRST EVER INTERNET COMMUNITY OF KHYBER MEDICAL COLLEGE
We developed an internet based community by the name of "KMCOnline" in order to provide guidance, and sharing study resources among students. In addition it has been providing a forum for discussion of study related problems and other college issues. Recently we added a feature whereby all members shall contribute viva questions they have experienced. The community has more than 360 members at present. KMCOnline is accessible at http://groups.msn.com/KMCOnline

  • LECTURES ON USMLE & PLAB SEPTEMBER 2002
In 2002 we arranged four lectures on foreign examinations highlighting their various aspects including visas, which programs to apply to, application procedure, books to study, costs involved and general tips regarding the examination itself. • LECTURE FOR 1ST YEAR: INTRODUCTION TO MEDICAL STUDIES MARCH 2003
Addressing this very crucial introductory theme, SLF attempted to orient the New 1st year students to a life in medicine. The lecture aimed at identifying the do's and don'ts; which were based on trial and error by the more experienced seniors. It touched almost all the related issues such as methods of studying, examinations, as well as some personal problems faced by new students. Speakers included Munaza Anwar, Imad Ahmad, Ayesha Zahir & Hajira Ilyas from Old Final Year, Usman Ahmad Raza & Qurat ul Ain from New Final Year, Atif Rehman from 4th Year, Afaq Akhtar & Umair Ali from 3rd Year.

  • LECTURE TO 3RD YEAR: PRINCIPLES OF ACTIVE LEARNING MARCH 2003
Speaking on this topic to the 3rd year students, The Chairman SLF, Prof. Dr. Sultan Mahmood brilliantly highlighted the changing trends in the learning process towards the ones that are more fruitful and less confusing. The speech emphasized the importance of adopting an active style of learning that was efficient and specifically tailored to individuals capabilities. It was acknowledged by the presence of Principal Khyber Medical College, Prof. Dr. Zia ul Islam. and Prof. Dr. Ejaz Hassan Khan.

  • LECTURE TO 3RD YEAR: BASIC CONCEPTS & COMMON DIFFICULTIES IN GENERALBACTERIOLOGY & PARASITOLOGY MARCH 2003

  • 3 DAY SEMINAR ON USMLE & ELECTIVES 20TH 23RD APRIL 2003
The increasing trend towards foreign licensing exams has made it necessary to inform those intending to undertake them about the pros and cons and the most feasible route of action. In this regard an excellent seminar was organized by Coordinator Exam Information Ms. Ayesha Zahir and Coordinator Local Activities Ms. Munaza Anwar and the rest of the team. Speakers included Nosheen Javed MBBS MD, Saira Ahmed MBBS MD and Dr. Akbar Ali Khan MBBS. On the first day, Dr. Nosheen Javed, Dr. Saira Ahmad and Dr. Akbar Ali Khan started off by giving an overview of the whole process, it's pros and cons and the details of how to go about preparing for the first and the second step. The second day was reserved for the ERAS and the CSA exams and on the last day, they talked about how to choose a program, about the different kinds of visas, step 3 and also the intricate details of how one should present himself/herself during the interviews. The four speakers presented the big picture from different perspectives. On the second day, Dr. Farhan Shehzad spoke explicitly about the various aspects of the exam and highlighted the dilemma of whether to do a house job or not before taking the exams. In the end, Atif Rehman and Asad Ghafoor discussed the prospect of applying for undergraduate programs of summer electives and presented information about the procedure. We got a satisfying amount of positive feedback from the audience. It will go a long way in the smoothing out of an otherwise jagged path for future prospective candidates.

  • RENEWED FORMAT OF KHYBER ZINE THE FIRST EVER INTERNET MAGAZINE OFKHYBER MEDICAL COLLEGE
Khyber Zine (an electronic magazine of KMC) is in publication for more than one year now. After acquiring a reasonable amount of audience, SLF has now decided to expand the scope of this internet magazine. The new format has these important additions and changes:
Interviews from graduates of Khyber Medical College who have maintained extra ordinary performance in the field of medicine.
Case discussions. Every issue will contain an interesting case history from one of the wards of Khyber Teaching Hospital. A review of a good medical website or CD shall be included in each issue. Khyber Zine shall now be published every second month. A proper editorial board shall be selected for Khyber Zine to take care of all the matters and to maintain a high quality academic outlook of the magazine.

NATIONAL & INTERNATIONAL ACTIVITIES:

  • Attended IMCC Denmark IFMSA Pakistan joint seminar on "Leadership in Medical Students". It was a great experience.

  • Started working on Residency Database Project.

Romania (IFMSA Romania) - Victor Ciofoaia

Curriculum Database

briefly described here:
http://www.ifmsa.net/public/project.asp?id=18

and with the official page hosted at http://CurriculumDatabase.osmcluj.ro/

The project was started in 1999, aiming to offer medical students an opportunity to find information about the ways of studying and teaching medicine in other faculties and countries worldwide.
Since this is an IFMSA transnational project and there are some years since it started, I guess some of you are familiar with it. This year there are some new members in the Curriculum Database team and I hope the project will continue to develop.

MedStudLine

this is my project and is just about to be launched in March, just after the MM. Currently this is an official IFMSA Romania project developed by Medical Students' Society Bucharest and supported by all member organizations and also an IFMSA endorsed project.
Sort of a Student MedLine :)
MedStudLine.ro is a web site built on top of a database containing all the abstracts of all the scientific papers promoted by the medical students' scientific events (congresses, conferences, symposia, scientific magazines, etc) organized, published or made public by any other mean by the project participating organizations. The fundamental condition for admittance to this project of a scientific manifestation is the national or international impact of the event that promotes such papers: the scientific event should have as target group the entire medical student community of Romania or the international medical student community. MedStudLine.ro has both a Romanian and an English section that can be used both separate and simultaneously.

www.mediclass.org

Radu Drasoveanu (one of the project coordinators) briefly presented the project last year at the MM. This is a local Medical Students' Organziation Cluj project and is currently on the run, working for some time now.
This is a public link directory like www.google.com, but targeting medical sites.

The motto of this site is:
Have you ever searched the web for medical information?
Did you easily find the medical resource that you were looking for?
Have you ever wanted to be a part of the perfect medical student community?
Take a few minutes to browse the contents of this site. You may be surprised to find out that MediClass is what you have always needed! "

other projects but not officially related to scome, but supported by the same people from the SCOME ROMANIA team (in Romanian language still, but with student diaspora participation :D ):

Medical Students' Society Bucharest and Medical Students' Organization Cluj both have public discussion web based forums encouraging public discussions about any medical students problems, including medical education. (http://med.pub.ro/forum and http://forum.osmcluj.ro).

The first site includes medical MCQs, medical laws concerning the BIGs exams.

The most important national SCOME related events are just the scientific events almost every local organization organizes. Every IFMSA Romania organization member has a major scientific congress during the year where national (and sometimes international participation) is quite important. With the coming of medstudline, these events will have a common framework of presentation. there are many such events: the one in Timisoara, Cluj, Iasi, Craiova, Oradea, Tg. Mures, Sibiu, Constanta, Brasov, and again from this year Bucharest.

That should be the big picture. There are some minor events in different LOs, such as medical education concerning public conferences that invite professors, academicians or authorities to talk about education, exams, laws, marks, medicine in general, PBL, motivation etc... but these are "few and far between" :) SCOME Romania has a discussion group and works closely with the IT department (sort of New Technology support division in IFMSA). Local Organizations have one or more students promoting SCOME activities, mainly those related to the scientific events the LO organizes. Also there are some mixed programs such as Trans Med (inter university national 1 2 weeks student exchange program...) but not directly under SCOME surveillance.

Slovenia (SloMSIC) - Katja Kovac

  • Doing the student questionnaire and working with the curricular committee on improving the curricula
  • Preparing a separate questionnaire for the teacher's evaluation
  • Working on a protocol for Communication Skills workshop for the next school year
  • Excepting TeGEMEII protocol and starting to work on the translation.
  • Organising a SCOME/SCOPH project "Health Team" in cooperation with Students of Pharmacy and Student Nurses in learning and recognizing each others professional advantages and disadvantages for a better and more wholesome care of a patient

Switzerland (IFSMA Switzerland) - Camille Piguet

  • curriculum database
  • residency database
  • TeGeME translation is almost done, and students are going to fill it at least in Geneva. Moreover, we have data over the same test on 300 previous students.
  • AMEE meeting in Bern

Taiwan (MSA Taiwan) - Katherine Chen

From 2002 2003, SCOME has begun the 3rd year in Taiwan. SCOME is still very young in Taiwan, but all the LOMEs have tried their best to make all the medical students in Taiwan to be aware of SCOME. This year, the most important achievement of SCOME is MED LOVE e.paper. We have collected the e mail addresses of all the medical students and send them e.paper once a month. This e.paper contains:

  • Articles written by some well known doctors or professors to us.
  • Articles written by medical students ourselves.
  • Introduction of all kinds of activities held in all med schools.
  • Introduction of new books, movies, websites, or music related to medicine.
  • Information of seminars or workshops held in all med schools.
  • Links to good medical websites.
  • The progress of medical education in Taiwan each month

We will add some more columns in the next year SCOME project. We are hoping to make a intact connection on line for all the medical students in Taiwan. If you would like to view this e.paper, you could click:
